Linda Necklace
♥ Tribute to Linda Burney: She has paved the way for women to take leading roles in their communities. On 26 January 1988, Ms Burney marched alone side of her fellow community members at La Perouse in protest over the Australian Day celebrations. Linda Burney is the first Aboriginal person to enter the New South Wales Parliament. She was the Australian Labor Party National President through 2008-2009. Linda plays an influential role in policy decisions that impact on Aboriginal people. Even though she has a very busy schedule in politics, Linda can still find the time and energy to marchfor rights and equality for various sectors of society. We nominated Linda for our 2018 Mami Watta Collections Women of the year, thanking for her honourary work with one of our exclusive pieces.
Mami Watta is an artistic movement reconnecting with traditional knowlege, producing unique styles of jewelry and accessories that support the artisanship and hardwork of our Indigenous artists.
♥♥This piece is part of our line inspired by Australian First Nations, celebrating symbolic colours of black – represents the Aboriginal people of Australia. Yellow – represents the Sun, the giver of life and protector. Red – represents the red earth, the red ochre used in ceremonies and Aboriginal peoples' spiritual relation to the land.
This wearable artwork has been produced by artisans from the Embera Chami tribe of Colombia. It carries hours of work, calculation and imagination. Through the beadworks we can see a lot of references to colours from the natural environment and the Embera Cosmovision.
